History
First Baptist Church of New Market was established more than 172 years ago, in March 1852. Abiding faith, joyful hope, and prevailing love have been the spiritual forces guiding the church from its early history through today. We are a multi-ethnic church family and welcome members and friends from throughout the world who have relocated to the Piscataway area—from India, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Honduras, Haiti and many, many other places.
Over the years, First Baptist Church has served as the launching place for newly established ministries and as a home for several community services agencies. In fact, the church organized its first recorded community prayer service in 1859 to generate a spirit of cooperation in the Piscataway community, and it was a thriving and progressive source of faith and connectedness in our region for many years.
The original church built on the property at New Market Road was destroyed by fire in 1952. As a result of the faithfulness of the congregation and the generosity of both members of the church and the community at large, First Baptist was rebuilt as it stands today.
Since that time, reaching beyond the walls of the edifice to serve others has remained a cornerstone of our mission. As a church family that is diverse and inclusive, we seek to provide others in our local area with empathetic and loving support, and with a heartfelt invitation to join us in service to God’s people as well as in our weekly worship.
First Baptist Church is affiliated with American Baptist Churches of New Jersey and American Baptist Churches USA, through which we support missions and evangelism throughout the world. Additionally, an essential priority of our individual church body at this juncture is offering, instilling, restoring and renewing hope, as described in Romans 15: 13 — May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The congregation is excited about its future and dedicated to forging new paths for living out the mandate of the Scriptures — to love, serve and encourage to all who come to us and all who are encountered externally by members of our church body. We will continue to trust God and overflow with hope.
